Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) sensational forward Geoffrey Serunkuuma was the hero for Uganda as the Cranes edged past Cape Verde.
Serunkuuma came off the bench in the second half and scored the lone goal to help Uganda earn victory against Cape Verde in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier game played at Estadio Verzei on Sunday.
Uganda defied the odds to eventually overcome Cape Verde and go top of group L with 3 points after Match Day one.
The game was initially scheduled to be played on Saturday but was postponed due to delays in flight of Uganda’s contingent from Dakar, Senegal to Praia City which forced CAF to push the game to Sunday.
With the game destined for a barren stalemate, Serunkuuma, like he has always done, was in the right place to tap home the lone goal of the game in the 83rd minute.
The clinical forward who had come on for Emmanuel Okwi in the 78th minute was well positioned to put away Geoffrey Walusimbi’s ground cross from the left flank.
The result means Uganda leads Group L with 3 points two ahead of Tanzania and Lesotho who shared spoils(1-1) while Cape Verde now languish at the bottom with no point.
Several other KCCA FC players also featured for Uganda including striker Derrick Nsibambi who earned his senior national team debut.
Isaac Muleme too started the game while defender Timothy Dennis Awany was a second half substitute replacing Derrick Nsibambi.
