When asked his best moment last season as KCCA FC wrapped up the 11th league title, manager Mike Mutebi, without mincing words, said it was Sulaimon Akinyemi’s sole effort goal that won the Villa tie at Nakivubo last season.
Mutebi was spot on because the goal had a three-fold impact; it brought KCCA inches to the league trophy, ensured the 11 time league champions got the bragging rights in the ageless city rivalry and showed the football community what Nigerian Import Akinyemi can offer on his good day.
Box to box midfielder Akinyemi vividly remembers the historic moment like it was yesterday and he is praying it happens again when the table leaders host SC Villa in the league on Tuesday.
“If the chance comes again and I play, by the special grace of God I will be trying to floor Villa again,” said Akinyemi, who scored three league goals last season.
The goal that sank Villa’s title hopes was one of a kind – Akinyemi, with his back against the goal, picked up a cross from the midfield before he deluded the entire Villa backline to send the ball past an in-lashing goalkeeper to send Nakivubo Stadium into a delirium.
The Nigerian has been playing second fiddle to Isaac Kirabira, Muzamir Mutyaba and Paul Mucureezi this season but with the latter doubtful for the crunch tie, he may get time to fulfill his mission of destroying Villa again.
