CAF has handed KCCA FC a bye at the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup 2023/24.
This happened at the draw event for Africa’s premier club competitions held today in Cairo, Egypt.
The 13 times Uganda Premier League Champions will not play the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Cityzens will commence participation in the competition at the second preliminary round.
This is after CAF considered previous impressive performances of KCCA FC in group stages of the Confederation Cup 2017 and Champions League 2018.
In the second preliminary round, KCCA FC will face the winner on aggregate between Olympique de Béja (Tunisia) and Abu Salim SC (Libya).
Olympique de Beja
They come from Beja, Tunisia and play their games at Municipal Stadium Beja a 15,000 seater stadium. They finished 7th out of 16 teams in the Tunisian league last season.
Olympique de Beja qualified for CAF Confederation Cup after beating Esperance 1-0 in the Tunisian Cup final.
Abu Salim SC
Based in Tripoli, Libya they made their top league debut in 2018/19 as this was was their first season in the top tier Libyan league football system since it’s inception in 1963.
They finished 4th in the Championship round of the Libyan league after the regular season and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.
KCCA FC will play the first leg of the second preliminary round games away from home between September 15th to 17th September 2023 and the second leg at home between 29th September to 1st October 2023.
The winner on aggregate over two legs will qualify for the group stage games for the CAF Confederation Cup 2023/24.
The last time KCCA FC played on the continent was against Rwanda’s AS Kigali in the 2nd preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup in January 2021.
