KCCA FC returned to winning ways, beating Bright Stars 2-1 in a Uganda Premier League (UPL) match played at Lugogo on Tuesday to cut SC Villa’s lead.

The defending champions remain second on the log with 46 points, one behind Villa, keeping their league title hopes alive.

Geoffrey Serunkuuma’s penalty on 12 minutes and an own goal by Innocent Asiimwe in the 55th that  ensured KCCA head into Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup first leg playoff clash against Egypt’s El-Masry with victory.

Timothy Awany (R) was solid in defense on his return after missing the league ties against Soana and Police

After registering back to back stalemates against Soana and Police, KCCA knew this time around, the tie against Bright Stars was a must-win affair.

KCCA went ahead when winger Brian Majwega danced his way through a forest of legs only for Abdurnoor Kanana to bring him down in the penalty box.

Referee David Oula made no mistake, pointing to the spot. Serunkuuma stepped up and buried the spot kick for KCCA’s lead and his 15th of the league.

The visitors almost suffered from another penalty when Ibrahim Kissa held the ball in the forbidden area but the referee waved play on.

Tom Masiko marshaled the midfield for KCCA FC, and controlled the tempo of the game well

KCCA’s lead, however, didn’t last long, Victor Aweko catching the home side’s defence napping and coolly controlling the ball on the chest before drawing the tie level at 29 minutes.

Towards the stroke of halftime, Serunkuuma headed in the ball from Tom Masiko’s free kick only for assistant referee to wave for offside.

Geoffrey Serunkuuma (L) and Paul Mucureezi will be key for KCCA FC against El Masry on April 8th 2017 in the 2017 Total CAF Confederation Cup

After recess both teams showed intent but it was Serunkuuma who fed Paul Mucureezi with a pinpoint pass in the 52nd minute and the latter caused panic in the vistors’ box only for defender Asiimwe to put the ball in his own net and make it 2-1 for KCCA.

Both gaffers made tactical calls and changes but it was Mike Mutebi’s boys that claimed the day.
