Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) clinched the 2016/17 league title after defeating Lweza FC 2-0 on Tuesday at Phillip Omondi stadium.
Goals from Tom Masiko and ever reliable Geoffrey Sserunkuma ensured KCCA FC successfully defended the title they won last season and the 12th in history.
Team Manager,Mike Hillary Mutebi was delighted that the team won the championship with two games to the end of the season and indicated this would give them more time to focus on the forthcoming continental games.
“It is a good feeling that we win the championship with two games to go. I’m because this helps us concentrate on the Confederation Cup games because the league title task is out of way.
“He told www.kccafc.co.ug before noting that the game against Lweza acted as a precursor for the clash against Morocco’s FUS Rabat.
” I said we would use it as a precursor.
Not being disrespectful to Lweza but the fact that we won the game and championship, the players get more confident ahead of the game against FUS Rabat this weekend,” added the manager.
He also asserts that winning the championship is important in the long term project that KCCA FC want to be.
” There is an improvement from the way we play, the understanding of the game and player’s confidence. All these factors have started to sink in and that is our target,”
“Our target is to create a team that plays smart football but also effective. Like I always say, we do not have stars yet but we can create them and I’m impressed that the players are grasping the ideas to the detail,” Mutebi further stated.
However, the manager is not carried away with winning the league title because he believes there is another task ahead of them.
“We have Africa, we can only evaluate ourselves on the continent because that is where we rub shoulders with the best.
So this only gives us confidence to go and compete ably rather than participate,” he indicated.
With two games to play(against Proline and Sadolin Paints), KCCA FC who have thus far amassed 60 points successfully defended the league title.
Focus now shifts to the group stage games of the Total CAF Confederation Cup where KCCA FC who are in group A take on FUS Rabat(Morocco) this Saturday. The other opponents include Club Africain(Tunisia) and Rivers United(Nigeria).
